Green Chilli
India is one of the largest producers and exporters of green chillies in the world, thanks to its favourable climate and extensive chilli cultivation. Although most chilli export data generally highlights red chillies, Indian green chillies are also shipped in significant quantities internationally. In recent years, India shipped over 150,000 shipments of green chillies to global buyers, making it one of the top exporters by shipment volume globally. The major destinations for Indian green chilli exports include the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and the United Kingdom, among others, reflecting strong demand in the Middle East and Europe.
The export of green chillies involves various varieties suited for international markets, with exporters maintaining high quality standards to meet global requirements. Many Indian exporters supply chillies like G4, S9, and other spicy types with good shelf life, tailored for different culinary preferences abroad. These chillies are usually graded, packed, and shipped following export regulations, including certifications from bodies such as the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), ensuring they meet safety and quality norms for export.
Green chilli export also provides economic opportunities for farmers and exporters in different Indian states. Regions in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and other chilli-growing belts contribute significantly to exports by supplying fresh, high-quality chillies. Some farmers and cooperatives have successfully linked with overseas buyers, exporting produce to Gulf countries like the UAE and Qatar, which can increase farm incomes and open up new markets for Indian agriculture.
