Ginger
India is one of the major exporters of ginger in the world, known for its pungent flavor, aroma, and high-quality rhizomes that suit both culinary and medicinal uses. In 2024, India exported about 82.26 million kg of ginger valued at approximately $98.9 million USD, showing strong international demand for both fresh and processed ginger products. Major markets for Indian ginger include Bangladesh, Morocco, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia, reflecting wide geographic appeal and diverse buyer needs.
The export trade covers different forms of ginger, including fresh ginger, dried/dehydrated ginger, ginger powder, and value-added products like ginger oil and oleoresin. Top producing states such as Karnataka, Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Odisha, and Kerala supply quality produce tailored for export requirements. Exporters follow global standards and certifications, including quality grading, proper packaging, and regulatory compliance, to ensure that Indian ginger meets the expectations of overseas buyers.
Despite its strong position, India still has room to grow its share in the global ginger market, especially in processed segments like dried ginger and ginger extracts. Challenges like perishability, cold-chain infrastructure, and competition from other suppliers can affect export volumes. Nevertheless, continued demand from the Middle East, Africa, and North America, along with Indian exporters’ efforts to improve quality and logistics, supports the country’s role as a key player in the global spice export industry.
