Pomegranate

India is one of the leading exporters of fresh pomegranates in the world, supplying high-quality fruit like the popular Bhagwa and Super Bhagwa varieties that are especially prized for their bright red skin, juicy arils, and sweetness. These varieties are grown mainly in states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, and are prepared for export by careful grading, sorting, and cold-chain packing to maintain freshness during transit. Indian pomegranates are typically packed in ventilated cartons and shipped under certifications like APEDA and GlobalG.A.P. to meet international standards.

Indian pomegranate exports have been steadily growing in both volume and value, with recent shipments exceeding tens of thousands of tonnes annually. In the 2023-24 season, India exported around 72,011 metric tons of pomegranates valued at approximately USD 69 million, and shipments in 2024-25 have also shown significant growth, reflecting rising global demand. Traditionally, exports have gone to markets in the Middle East, South Asia, and Europe, including the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka and others.

Beyond traditional air freight, India has recently expanded new export routes and markets. For the first time, commercial sea shipments of pomegranates have been successfully sent to destinations like the United States and Australia, with trial consignments demonstrating that with proper cold-chain management, long-distance sea freight is viable for fresh fruit. This expansion into premium and distant markets is opening up greater opportunities for growers and exporters, helping Indian pomegranates gain a stronger foothold globally.
